Healthy New Year!

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

As we cross over into this new year, many individuals use this new chapter as an opportunity to set goals for the next 365 days. Do you make resolutions for the new year? If so, what are they?

According to statista.com, America’s top New Years resolutions in 2020 included:

  1. manage finances better
  2. eat healthier
  3. be more active
  4. lose weight
  5. improve mental well being

Have you ever made any of these goals for yourself? More importantly, have you MET any of these goals you set for yourself? If your answer is no, maybe your goals are not specific enough. Maybe, instead of making lofty yearly resolutions, we scale it back a bit and focus more on daily habits that are more obtainable.

For example, if your goal is “I will be more active”, what does that even mean? How do we measure that? An alternative to this goal could be, “I will walk up and down my driveway to get my mail, versus driving” or “I will do sitting exercises during the commercials of my favorite show”.

Instead of “I will eat healthier”, maybe try, “I will make sure I have one serving of vegetables every meal” or “I will only have two sodas a day”.

Instead of “I will improve my mental well being”, try “I will do something every day that I truly enjoy” or “I will make it a priority to meet up with friends at least once a month”.

Atomic Habits, a book written by James Clear, is a great example of a framework of how to break bad habits, and how to establish/adopt new ones- not as it relates to a yearly goal, but a daily routine. I recommend this book one hundred times over for anyone interested in personal development or would like further guidance in this area.

On behalf of the Sunterra Springs family, we wish you a wonderful and healthy new year. Now, go set some goals!
